Bergen - Sognefjord - Balestrand - Fjærland - Suphella-glacier - Flåm - Vik - Bergen

On Wednesday 18 of July our van is driving from The Netherlands to Hanstholm in Denmark. The ferry brings us to Bergen. In Bergen is our sailing yacht De Hilde Baudine. Your start for a beautiful vacation trough Fjord Norway!

Bergen
A city that still retains the charm and atmosphere of a small town, with its wooden buildings and narrow alleys. 

Bergen is Norway's most international town, full of tradition and history. For part of the middle ages this city of seven mountains was the capital. The finest view of Bergen and it's surroundings is from mount Ulriken, after a cable car ride.

Along the harbor, you find the Bryggen. Bryggen is the most intact representative of an architectural tradition witch dates back almost nine hundred years. It's listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Bryggen has 61 protected buildings. The area houses a variety of businesses, including shops, studios, handicraft companies, restaurants and offices.

A few miles south of Bergen is the home of Edward Grieg. There is also a museum honoring the composer. Uniting Norwegian folk music with the new Romantic music of the continent, he placed Norway on the musical world map for all time.

Music lovers listen to Grieg and picture in their mind's eye fjords, mountains, green forests, rivers and trolls.

We sail to the most famous fjord of Norway, The Sognefjord. A cruise with De Hilde Baudine through this fjord will be a memorable experience!

The Sognefjord
This fjord is the world largest fjord, 204 kilometres long and up to 1308 metres deep.
In this area is more excitement, culture, activities, nature and sights than most people realize.

Nature has been generous to the Sognefjord, giving it features as varied as smooth polished rocks by the sea, green forests, rivers, waterfalls and high peaks.
Nature-lovers are in their element with good seawater fishing and diverse flora and fauna.

Balestrand
Balestrand kommune is one of the smallest municipalities in the region of Sogn, with approximately 1500 inhabitants. The city is known for its ornate Swiss-style houses. It has a tradition of art and craftsmanship.

With its snow-covered mountains and open fjord landscape, Balestrand has been a favorite holiday place for travelers through centuries.

Fjåerland and Suphellabreen
From Balestrand we sail to Fjåerland. Fjærland is the district surrounding Fjærlandsfjord, a branch of Sognefjord. Fjærland has approximately 300 inhabitants. The area has been settled since the Viking Age.

The landscape in Fjærland has been shaped by glaciers. The results are magnificent mountains and valleys. The glaciers Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen come down to the valley floor in Fjærland. These are branches of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European continent (487 km2). The lower Supphellebreen, at an elevation of 60 meters, is the lowest lying glacier in Southern Norway.

Busses are going to the glaciers and to the Norwegian Glacier Museum. Afterwards we can accompany a guide for a walk on the nearby Suphellabreen.

Vik
At the south bank of the Sognefjord, enclosed by high mountains, lies Vik (or Vikoyra). Vik is an old Viking settlement and an early religious center.

We can see the beautiful stave church from this town. Made the 12th century of wood.

If we have time left, we will sail to Flåm.

Flåm
Beautiful Flåm is situated in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord. Surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys. 

Ofcourse we can discover the Flåm Railway. An incredible train journey from Flåm station to the mountain station at Myrdal.

This exciting stretch of railway attracts people from all corners of the world, making the Flåm Railway one of Norway's major and most spectacular tourist attractions.

The train journey provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery. On the 20 km-long train ride we will see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascade down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms.

The Flåm Railway is one of the worlds steepest railway lines. The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain are manifestations of the most daring and skilful engineering in Norwegian railway history.

We are leaving this majestic fjord and sail back to Bergen.

Bergen
In the late Middle ages the Hanseatic League established the German Kontor in Bryggen, which became a thriving center of international trade. The characteristic buildings represent a building tradition dating back almost 900 years. The old wooden buildings along the harbor front in Bergen were placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

You can take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Fløy mountain, or the cable car to Ulriken’s peak, and take in a view of the city surrounded by fjords and mountains.

From Bergen the ferry brings you to Denmark. With our van* you arrive in Dronrijp (The Netherlands) on Tuesday 31 of July. It is also possible to take the airplane.
